Non-Cellular Applications of Regenerative Medicine Treatments

The goal of regenerative medicine procedures in general is to restore structure and function of damaged tissues and organs, and that is a very important point that distinguishes regenerative medicine procedures from conventional medicine procedures.  For example, we are not trying to just stop pain or to improve a joint through lubricating it or administering an anti-inflammatory medication.  The goal of the regenerative treatment is to restore the normal structure and function of the damaged tissue.

I previously discussed what are commonly referred to as stem cell treatments, which is a cellular regenerative medicine treatment, and now I am going to talk about non-cellular regenerative medicine treatments.  The difference is that non-cellular treatments do not contain cells.  Some of these treatments are cellular products such as proteins, but they are not cells.  That’s the difference between the two types of treatments, but the mechanism of actions and the treatment goals are very similar.  More specifically, the goal is the same and the action is similar.

It is very important for a doctor to be well-versed in both non-cellular and cellular treatments in order to be able to determine which specific treatment is more likely to help a specific patient for a specific condition.  This is why we call what we do personalized precision medicine.

I could use one of a number of non-cellular or cellular treatments to address a very similar condition in different patients.  One might ask, why are you using a different treatment for the same condition?  The reason is that everybody is different.  Everybody responds differently to the same treatment, and every person’s condition is unique.  Take high blood pressure as an example.  We all know that there are many blood pressure medications on the market.  If every medication works the same on every person, we would only need one blood pressure medication.   So, part of my job is to determine what treatment is most likely to help a specific patient for his or her specific condition.

Let’s start with oxygen ozone injection therapy which is a non-cellular regenerative treatment.  Oxygen ozone injection therapy is an extremely powerful regenerative medicine treatment.  It helps cells increase in number, which is called proliferation, by favorably influencing the redox system, which controls the cell cycle.  It also has multiple other properties such as increasing oxygen delivery to tissues and reducing inflammation in the body.  I have had a lot of successes using this injection therapy treating patients with disc herniations, joint pain, sports injuries and muscle spasm because of these unique properties.  Oxygen ozone can also be used to stimulate hair follicles to reproduce more hair and thicker hair by the same mechanisms that I described above.

Another non-cellular product with regenerative properties is exosomes.  Exosomes are an extremely fascinating cellular excretion product.  Exosomes are vacuoles that are excreted by cells which contain messenger RNA, micro RNA, and proteins. They are very powerful in activating the body’s own stem cells to help rejuvenate and repair damaged structures.  For example, exosomes can potentially stimulate repair of damaged cartilage, skin and nervous tissue which is a very powerful non-cellular regenerative repair mechanism within our body’s own amazing ability to heal.

A2M is another powerful non-cellular regenerative medicine treatment.   A2M is a protein that is naturally found in our body which can be concentrated and injected into various structures such as joints and discs.  A2M will capture and deactivate proteins that destroy cartilage.  It is a very important treatment if cartilage is being destroyed in a joint or in a disc since A2M can stop the process.  It also has growth factor binding sites, so it has regenerative properties.

These are some of the many treatments with non-cellular regenerative medicine.   Since I wrote a previous blog discussing cellular regenerative medicine treatments, I won’t go into it again.  The most important point, as I discussed above, is for a doctor to be well versed in all types of regenerative medicine treatments in order to be able to determine which of these non-cellular or cellular treatments are most appropriate for a specific patient in order to give the patient the best chance of healing.

There have been numerous examples of how a single treatment with oxygen ozone injection therapy dramatically reduced my patients’ pain and significantly improved their quality of life, even those who were suffering from debilitating pain.  My patients often use the word “miracle” to describe their recovery.  It’s no surprise that medical oxygen ozone can accomplish this.  Oxygen-ozone promotes healing and helps to reverse the pathology.

Spine surgery can remove a herniated portion of a disc, but then the disc is permanently disrupted. Medications reduce the stimuli from painful pathology, but the medication is not curing the problem. It is just reducing the stimuli. And though certain deep tissue massage can help improve muscle pathology, various superficial massage techniques may make you feel better, but they’re just reducing the painful stimuli.

Ozone also helps restore the normal state of the tissue in our body and helps to restore homeostasis. Without homeostasis, an organism cannot survive. An organism has to be able to have a level of homeostasis. For example, if we weren’t able to control the sodium concentration in our blood, we would rapidly die. Oxygen-ozone helps the cells restore homeostasis when the scales are tipped in a certain direction that is not beneficial to the cells. Oxygen-ozone also helps prevent future injury, by helping the body cope with oxidative stress. That’s an extremely important point, which I’ve discussed extensively in other interviews, which I encourage people to listen to. It is a very fascinating topic. The ability to cope with oxidative stress is a very, very beneficial effect of ozone.

In order to determine if a patient will benefit from oxygen ozone injection therapy, I look at a number of factors. The history is extremely important. That is one of the most important aspects of determining if a patient will benefit. It is important to ask specific questions about the patient’s pain, and when it started, as well as other pertinent questions. During the history, I also observe the patient. I observe how they walk, sit and how they move which are also very important.

Doing a guided physical exam is extremely valuable with palpation techniques. For example, I look for involuntary muscle spasms when I am doing certain maneuvers. It is an additional indication of problems, rather than just relying on the patient saying, “Oh that’s painful,” or not. Sometimes the patient is not aware of these minute pain triggers.

Then, of course, I look at the diagnostic testing reports. I don’t look at the diagnostic tests first. I only look at the diagnostic testing reports after I do my history and physical examination, and formulate an opinion on what is most likely causing the patient’s pain. Then, I look at the diagnostic test report(s), because in a significant number of cases, the issue that is noted on the testing is not necessarily the cause of the patient’s pain.

I have talked about this before in previous podcasts or blogs, but I’ll just briefly mention it again. Studies have been done to demonstrate this, that if you take 1,000 people who are asymptomatic, they have no back pain or pain in general.  They are doing well and they are functioning great; you do an MRIs on each of them, you are going to find herniated discs on 200 or more of those patients. Those herniated discs are not causing pain at all. You can’t just jump to the conclusion that their pain is always caused by herniated discs.

I determine what pathology is causing their symptoms and I treat that pathology appropriately.  This approach enables me to remove the cause of the pain.   I have patient coming with their multiple tests and multiple doctors’ conclusion that they need back surgery but I determined it’s not a disk issue causing the pain but the hip issue. I remove the hip cause, the pain is also removed.

Ozone has so many health benefits. Throughout the world, many, many people seek treatment with ozone for a variety of medical conditions and for general health benefits. I’ll just list a few of them here.

There are two very important points: there are two sides to an oxidative and a reduction reaction. It is called a redux reaction and it is oxidation and reduction. Both are equally important. Enzymes will perform both of these reactions. The other thing to note is that enzymes are self-regulating. So, enzymes, once they do their job, will stop the reaction. If we get rid of the free radicals that are threatening ourselves or other parts of our body, the enzyme is not going to keep working if it is not necessary. It will stop or slow down because they are a natural part of the body, and have feedback loops just like anything in the body and they will self-regulate. Those are very important points.
