Is PRP Treatment Right for You?

June 16, 2023

If you are experiencing chronic joint pain or tendon ailments but dread the idea of undergoing an invasive procedure such as surgery, there is a viable alternative treatment you ought to consider.

Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, may provide enough pain relief to eliminate or reduce your need for prescription pain medications.

Platelet-rich plasma injections can also delay the need for orthopedic surgery and, in some cases, provide sufficient relief so that surgery is no longer necessary.

PRP therapy may also serve as part of a post-surgery treatment plan because the injections can speed up healing in muscles, tendons, and ligaments, enabling you to get back to normal activities sooner.

However, PRP treatment may not be appropriate for everyone. For example, if you have cancer, an active infection, unstable angina, a blood disorder, or any sort of abnormal platelet function, it can disqualify you from receiving PRP treatments.

Otherwise, PRP treatment could make all the difference between troublesome pain and a more pain-free, active life.

An Effective Alternative to Surgery

Of the three components of your blood — red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets – platelets are the cells responsible for blood clotting and wound healing thanks to the numerous healing factors they contain, such as cytokines and growth compounds. In this way, platelet-rich plasma helps new tissues heal and regain function.

The compound used in PRP therapy contains a high concentration of platelets. To create it, a sample of your blood is drawn, then spun in a high-speed centrifuge to concentrate the platelet levels. The resulting PRP is then injected into the painful area or injury to prompt accelerated healing. Your body’s natural response is to send the platelets to sites of injuries, enabling the PRP to increase the number of platelets in the affected area so that the healing process occurs more quickly and effectively.

PRP treatment is an outpatient procedure. Once you receive your PRP injections, you can go home or resume your normal activities. Some PRP patients notice an improvement in their symptoms immediately, but typically it takes several weeks to notice a gradual reduction in pain and improved mobility.

At Alternative Disc Therapy in Caldwell, New Jersey, triple board-certified physician, and regenerative medicine pioneer Dr. Warren J. Bleiweiss frequently performs PRP injections to successfully treat conditions such as:

  • Joint pain
  • Joint arthritis
  • Tendonitis
  • Cartilage injury
  • Ligament tears
  • Sports injuries
  • Thinning hair

Before addressing your chronic pain, Dr. Bleiweiss evaluates your case to determine if PRP is a recommended treatment. If so, he uses photo-activated PRP, which is more potent than standard PRP, to address your injuries and promote healing.

Photo-activated PRP is a powerful regenerative medical treatment in which isolated platelets are activated using three different wavelengths of light. Photoactivation is a unique process that makes the platelets more powerful and less inflammatory.

The good news is that photo-activated PRP treatment is extremely safe. Because PRP consists of your own cells and plasma, there is no risk of an allergic reaction or complications.
